What is a hip replacement?

Also known as hip arthroplasty, a hip replacement is a surgical procedure that replaces an injured and/or diseased hip joint with a manmade joint or implant. Hip replacement surgery could help you to regain mobility and find relief from pain if you have a worn or damaged hip joint.

The artificial hip attaches to the femur and the pelvis, behaving and moving like a natural hip joint.

What does hip replacement surgery involve?

For hip replacement surgery, you’ll be placed under general anaesthetic.

First, your surgeon will make an incision of up to 30cm across the side of your hip. Your femur, the upper part of your thigh bone, is removed so that your surgeon can hollow out the natural socket for the head of it.

A socket is then fitted into the hollow of your pelvis, and the stem of the implant with a smooth ball on its end is positioned into the hollow of your femur. The cup and stem of the implant might be pressed or fixed into place using a special kind of bone ‘cement.’

Your wound will then be closed using stitches or clips, and a dressing applied to prevent infection.

Can I get a hip replacement on the NHS?

Hip replacement surgery is offered on the NHS for those who meet certain criteria. You might be accepted for hip replacement if you:

  • Have severe pain, stiffness and swelling in your hip that limits your mobility
  • Find that your hip pain is interfering with your quality of life and sleep
  • Struggle or are unable to complete everyday tasks, such as shopping or getting out of the bath, due to your hip pain
  • Are feeling depressed because of the pain/lack of mobility caused by your hip

To be offered hip replacement surgery on the NHS, you may have to have explored other methods of treatment, such as physiotherapy or steroid injections. If you are offered the surgery on the NHS, you may be placed on a long waiting list.

What our patients say

“After having months of continual flare-ups on my right knee, it seemed inconceivable that I may have to wait up to two years for treatment. The impact this was having on myself, and my family was awful. I got in touch with Electiva at the start of April, and they were able to offer me a surgery date of 28th April 2022. The feeling was amazing.”

“The impact of a long wait for surgery does little for one’s mental health. I would certainly recommend Electiva to anyone who is in need of prompt attention. I’m really happy with my results and my progress is going well.”

– John, total knee replacement
